Experiencing back pain? Carpel tunnel? What about migraines? Myofascial release may be able to help. Myofascial release is a very safe, hands-on technique of applying gentle sustained pressure to the myofascial connective tissue. The gentle pressure applied allows the fascia to lengthen. This helps to eliminate pain and restore motion.
Â
But wait, what is fascia?
Fascia is a very specialized system of the body. Think of it as a spider web that covers every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein, as well as, our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. It is one continuous structure that covers the body from head to toe without interruption. When fascia is healthy, it is relaxed and has a wavy-like structure. It can stretch and move without restriction.
You can probably start to imagine how restrictions might produce pressure and cause pain on many different parts of the body. Any kind of trauma, inflammation or surgical procedures can create this pressure. Pain from myofascial restrictions can be hard to diagnose because the restrictions do not show up in many of the standard tests we use to diagnose the causes of pain and discomfort (x-rays, CAT scans, electromyography etc.)
Myofascial release allows each patient to be seen as a unique individual. Therapists will use a multitude of myofascial release techniques to treat every individual’s unique condition and pain concerns. Each session is performed without oils, creams or machinery. This is done so that the therapist can accurately detect the myofascial restrictions and use the right amount of pressure to release the fascia.
